Aluminum: it’s lightweight, sturdy, and easy to handle. But what intrigues us most about the material are its mirroring properties. This reflective quality creates a remarkably colourful effect on its surrounding surfaces.
Working with aluminum (AI) has long been on our wishlist, yet we had never done so until we went on a playdate with designer Stella Verdult in 2022. An installation emerged: three aluminum cylinders, each with a coloured backside. Reflecting on the wall, the object appears to emit light. The polished surfaces mirror each other, and changing daylight and movements influence the intensity of the colours.
A wall-illuminating series of shelves is a continuation of our previous experiment. In these prototypes, the top and bottom sides each have a different colour. Our research into aluminum is ongoing: we are looking into various production possibilities and are, of course, experimenting with different shades and tones.
