Tufted Rug

For Bob & Annelies

2021, Rotterdam, private client

This hand-tufted rug is developed from an existing body of work and reworked to fit a particular space. Scale, colour and surface are adjusted in response to the space.

The rug was commissioned for the loft of Bob and Annelies van Eerd in a former Holland America Line warehouse on Katendrecht in Rotterdam. Time spent in the space shaped the design, informed by its proportions, architecture and changing light.

The clients are art collectors and live with several works by Marc Mulders. The layered use of colour in these paintings informed the rug’s palette. Deep tones were developed by combining different yarns, allowing colours to blend and shift depending on light and viewpoint.

The surface is built up in varying tuft heights, adding texture and depth. Rather than functioning as an autonomous object, the rug was developed from the space itself, in dialogue with its architecture and artworks.
