U Tubes

RENS X NEON KUNZE

The colour red – the throughline in our work – is elementary for neon lighting. The characteristic colours of neon lighting arise only when the colourless noble gas is discharged in an electron tube and comes into contact with fluorescent powder.

Upon request by Vienna Design Week, we explored the potential of new colour shades and light effects. We immersed ourselves in the technique at the 150-year-old family business Neon Kunze – and conducted numerous tests with raw materials.

By processing only the most contrasting colours (blue and yellow) in twenty mouth-blown u-tubes, the miraculous effect of neon lighting becomes highly visible to the naked eye. The experimental presentation was first shown in Vienna, and functions as the starting point for further research.
