Tally Up: The greater sum of colour
RENS X WOLFGORDON
In Tally Up we connect Wolf-Gordon's Scuffmaster's most successful
colours by adding the missing links: colours previously overlooked or
ignored for commercial purposes. The result: a balanced chart incorporating colours that are unexpected yet also appropriate to the US market.
In a ten-by-ten colour chart, we combined all-time favourites with colours that have fallen between the cracks. For this collection, we closely studied the Scuffmaster 2021 and 2022 order and sales data, making Wolf-Gordon's customers an integral part of the design thinking process.
We gained better insights into the Scuffmaster series: finding areas of overlap, a disproportionate offering in the category of 'non-colours' (whites, greys and blacks), and an overabundance of 'material colours' such as gold and copper variations. Moreover, we pinpointed the in-betweens – previously overlooked shades and hues.
Without looking for extremes, we have opted for a visually stimulating balance by subtly changing the emphasis on certain colours and ratios. Together they represent Tally up, the greater sum of colour.

RENS X WOLF-GORDON
Since the late 60s, Wolf-Gordon has been providing major US markets with innovative wallcoverings, paints and coatings. When the American design company sought to relaunch its Scuffmaster range of high-performance commercial paints and coatings in 2022, they asked RENS to re-envision the colour palette.
RENS paired its precise, almost mathematical approach to design research with a keen, intuitive eye for colour. Organising Scuffmaster's order information according to numbers, the designers gained valuable insights into the range. This understanding resulted in a colour chart in which RENS has infused a robust group of best-selling colours with newer concept colours.
